Jane - is this knitting pattern a tunic or a dress? It's both!

Jane is your next showstopper, a dress or tunic in herringbone stitch with ultra femme feather and fan trim. 

The Jane Dress features a unique hybrid construction of this garment offers the best of both seamed and seamless design. The sleeves and bodice are knit flat for a tailored fit, with the bodice construction supporting the volume of the seamless skirt. The skirt is knit in the round, with the shaping done in the first few rounds so you can knit the perfect length tunic or dress.

Construction

Jane is constructed with a hybrid method which involves both seamed and seamless sections. The bodice and sleeves are knit flat from the bottom up, blocked precisely, and seamed together. The skirt is picked up from the bodice after seaming and knit from the top down and in the round.

Your best fit

Choose the size closest to your actual upper chest measurement: 31 (34.25, 37.5, 40.75) [44, 47.25, 50.5] (53.75, 57, 59.25, 61.5) inches / 78.5 (87, 95.5, 103.5) [112, 120, 128.5] (136.5, 145, 150.5, 156) cm.

Upper chest is measured above the full bust, at an angle close to diagonal beneath the underarms, and straight across the back.

Jane is designed to fit with approximately 6 inches / 15 cm of positive ease at the fullest part of your bust.

If you need additional room for the bust, working the optional short row shaping will give you the best fit in the shoulders and armholes, while still making room for your chest. Short rows add length to the front only of the garment, so that the hem does not rise in the front.

Elizabeth is wearing size 2 with 6 inches / 15 cm of positive ease at the full bust. Her upper chest is 34 inches / 85 cm.

Yarn

Sample Shown in Wildflower Merino/Nylon DK

75% UK superwash merino, 25% nylon ; 218 yds / 200 m per 100 g skein. This is a hand-dyed heavy DK/light worsted weight yarn.

Yardage (shown in Blurple and Unicorn Tears): 1508 (1675, 1843, 2010) [2178, 2345, 2513] (2680, 2848, 3015, 3183) yds / 1378 (1531, 1685, 1837) [1991, 2144, 2297] (2450, 2604, 2756, 2910) m; 7 (8, 9, 10) [10, 11, 12] (13, 14, 14, 15) skeins.

If you'd like to make stripes, as seen in the sample, you'll need 75% of your yardage in the main color and 25% in a contrasting color.

Gauge

22 sts and 34 rows over 4 inches / 10 cm in herringbone stitch worked flat on size A needles. 21 sts and 32 rows over 4 inches / 10 cm in feather and fan stitch worked flat on size B needles.
